Tiny Tweaks for a Terrific Thanksgiving Print

We see it every year around this time. Well meaning advice that suggests you rip tradition from your table, and replace it with healthy alternatives. We don’t know about you, but this advice falls on DEAF EARS in the Skinny Scoopers kitchen... who REALLY replaces stuffing with celery sticks?

Skinny Scoopers say split the difference and make a few minor modifications to this sacred supper. Here now, we “POINT” out the savings waiting to be realized by trying these “tiny tweaks”:

SS Tweak #1:

Time to Talk Turkey. Tips for the bird. Think meat only. DON'T touch that crispy, salty, brown basted skin. When you really think about it, is it something you want to eat? Before it's cooked it has goose bumps.  We guess they're actually turkey bumps. Envision those little bumps as ugly pores where FEATHERS used to be. Doesn't sound at all good to Skinny Scoopers anymore.

Enjoy 1 cup of roasted turkey white and dark meat NO SKIN for only 5 POINTS®.  One roasted thigh with skin is 12 POINTS®. Turkey thighs don't look like ours. There's no meat on them. For 12 POINTS®!? Seriously. Go naked... without the skin that is. POINTS® Savings 7!!!

SS Tweak #2:
A healthy alternative to mashed potatoes? Skinny Scoopers have a great substitute for creamy mashed potatoes. If you can't stand the thought of no potato next to your turkey why not CAULPROMISE. We promise not to deny you too much here.

Take 1 large baking potato, peel and boil. Add 3 cups of cooked cauliflower. Mix with 1/2 cup nonfat milk, 1/4 cup of the hot water you cooked potatoes and cauliflower in and 1/2 cup of fat free chicken broth. No using the electric beater for these. Mix and mash vigorously to get a tricep workout.

Shake, shake, shake with salt and pepper to taste. Delicious. 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes is 4 POINTS®- who eats only 1/2 a cup? 1 full cup of mashed potatoes 8 POINTS®. 1 cup of Skinny Scoopers cauliflower is only 2 POINTS® and if you want the potato/cauliflower combo it's only 4 POINTS® for a full cup. Save up to 6 POINTS® with this trade off.

SS Tweak #3:
Sweet Potato Casserole. Skinny Scoopers LOVE sweet potatoes or yams. The health skinny on these orange veggies is superb. Since Thanksgiving will surely bring a few too many hot and creamy casseroles, why not skip the sweet potato kind and try a crispy and healthier choice? Try Skinny Scoopers Sweet Potato Wedges.

Take 6 medium sweet potatoes and slice into wedges. Spritz 'em with a non fat cooking spray. Toss them in a bowl and combine with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, a few tablespoons chopped rosemary, a dash of crushed red pepper and 2 tablespoons of Splenda Brown Sugar. Shake them around to coat then bake on a cookie sheet until brown and crispy. Around 20 minutes at 375. DELICIOUS!!!  2 POINTS® for 12 wedges. 3/4 cup serving of sweet potato casserole 12 POINTS®. Savings... 10 POINTS®

SS Tweak #4:
Pumpkin Pie Whip. Remember we just threw this pie in your face substitute last week. Pumpkin is so wonderful but the pie with buttery crust is just so BAD. Try a batch of Skinny Scoopers' Pumpkin Pie Whip instead.  2 POINTS® for 1 serving. Piece of homemade pumpkin pie
9 POINTS®. Savings... 7 POINTS®

SS Tweak #5:

Gravy, oh where do we begin? Don't be a DRIP by making gravy from turkey drippings. STOP, IN THE NAME OF LOVE... handles that is. You can choose a healthy alternative to this loaded with fat and high POINTS® item served in the boat. Why not shake things up a bit and serve a healthy delicious fruit salsa to top turkey?

Chop a small red onion, 2 mangoes, 1 small jalapeno pepper, handful of cilantro, peeled cucumber and squeeze of lime. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of honey and salt and pepper to taste. 1 POINT® for 2 tablespoons. Savings... 4-8 POINTS®.

If your family turns hostile on this gravy stand-in, then just alter your recipe to create a healthier substitute. Take 1/2 cup of liquid from cooked turkey, drain like Hell sister. Mix this with non-fat milk and chicken broth to blend. With lots of spices you can jazz it up to be delicious. Salt, pepper and the spices you used to flavor the meat are great. Skinny Scoopers love sage, thyme and garlic pepper. Fat dripping gravy 1/2 cup for 8 POINTS®. Skinny Scoopers gravy substitute 2 POINTS® for 1/2 cup. Savings... 6  POINTS®.

SS Tweak #7
Cranberry Sauce- OK, we can’t let go of our favorite way to make it “kicky”... namely, Grand Marnier or Amaretto liqueur. Still, you can net HUGE savings by cutting the sugar in HALF. Don’t worry, we’re not suggest you serve it all mouth-puckering tart. Simply use Splenda Blend for Baking in place of the sugar. (Use half the amount called for in a full sugar version.) Also, if your recipe calls for orange marmalade, try stirring in the same amount of Smucker’s Sugar-Free Marmalade. YUM! Both of these “tiny tweaks” take a serving of this saucy-sauce from 7 POINTS® down to 4. We’ll take a 3 point savings any day of the week...

SS Tweak #8
Stuffing your face or the bird? Let’s start with this being an ugly word shall we? I mean, doesn’t it conjure images of what you will be doing on Black Friday to get into your jeans? Skinny Scoopers prefer “Dressing”... sounds so much better doesn't it?

SS have a few quick tips to cut this calorie laden casserole down considerably. First, if you use meat to flavor your dressing use a low fat version. Growing up we used sausage as a staple in dressing, THE FULL FAT KIND. Skinny Scoopers say OK to sausage but use low fat turkey sausage instead. Cook it, drain it and even rinse it. Get all the fat out you can before adding to other ingredients.

Step two, we saute onion and celery for dressing. Instead of using butter, spray your nonstick pan and add vegetables. If you need some help cooking these without burning, add a small amount of chicken broth to the pan.

Tip three for healthier dressing is our favorite substitute of all. Use chicken broth and fruit juice in place of butter. You need something to get the bread to stick together but it doesn't have to be fat or oil. Try using low sugar cranberry juice or no sugar added apple juice. Better yet, combine juices with fat free chicken broth and mix away.

Last but not least add some fresh fruit and a small amount of dried fruit. Apples are a favorite so we toss apple chunks in at the last minute. Also throw in a handful of dried cranberries. You don't need a lot of them since they'll plump up with moisture and cooking.
Once you add tasty vegetables, fruit and the juice/broth combo to your dressing it will be delicious and not make you delirious. Old Style sausage stuffing 18 POINTS® per serving. Skinny Scoopers dressing... 6 POINTS® ENJOY!!!

Total Savings We're Thankful For? 12 POINTS® per serving.
